banned books

(example of a book that should cause worry because i could succeed one day)

now, not to date my parents or anything (let's be honest here i am totally trying to point out their age...but i do know what goes around comes around!) but as i was reading their AARP magazine i stumbled upon a rather scary "banned books" list. let me tell you, i have no idea what kids are reading this days because, basically, every single childhood book i loved and hated is on this list. (loved the obvious ones, hated the books required by school, which are even more obvious). i mean at the time i hated reading the books, but they are all great reads now that i am 22 and actually enjoy challenging myself (stretching it a little bit i know) i can see the importance of at least reading the books. and honestly, if i had to suffer through them all the other kids should have to as well. i mean what are they going to complain about now? they pretty much have everything nowadays.

i mean i know kids aren't reading the classics in school anymore. henry, my 10 year old brother, is required to read Mr. Peabody's Apples by Madonna, yes a boy is required to read a book by Madonna. when you read the list you will understand my shock and maybe be a little bit surprised yourself.

anyways, check out the list, i'm sure you will be shocked but to give you some highlights:

Too Political:
1. All Quiet on the Western Front
2. The Grapes of Wrath
3. For Whom the Bell Tolls
4. Animal Farm
5. 1984
6. Slaughterhouse 5

Irreligious:
1. On the Origin of Species
2. The Lord of the Rings
3. Harry Potter Series

Socially Offensive:
1. The Autobiography of Ben Franklin
2. The Scarlet Letter
3. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
4. Brave New World
5. Gone With the Wind
6. Of Mice and Men
7. Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl
8. The Catcher in the Rye
9. Fahrenheit 451
10. To Kill A Mockingbird
11. James and the Giant Peach
12. Catch-22
13. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

i mean the list goes on and on, i am just giving you the most unbelievable to me. these books are not going to be in the library or taught in schools. i would love to comment on all of them but that would take days.

happy reading!
